Breathe Life Into Your Garden With A Greenhouse

When you think of a garden structure, you most likely think of an object you've placed in your garden to enhance it in some way. Most garden structures are precisely that, such as fountains that give the garden a focus, or stakes and lattice work that allows plants to grow and be supported in such a way as to look nice. But, would you ever consider an entire building to be a garden structure? Many people wouldn't, but in fact, a greenhouse is considered a garden structure. Greenhouses are buildings made of glass that trap ultraviolet light from the sun and keeps the air inside the building warm, in spite of whatever temperature is outside.

There can literally be snow on the ground outdoors while the inside of your greenhouse is 60 degrees and plants are growing comfortably. For those who live in cold climates, greenhouses make it possible to grow plants that you normally would not be able to. In New York, for example, the summer months are too short to grow watermelon properly and at best, those who'd attempt the feat would have a watermelon that is not ripe and is about twice the size of a fist. With a greenhouse, growing watermelon in New York can be easily accomplished, because a greenhouse varies the plant's climate. You can enjoy watermelon in the middle of December and maybe have some with Christmas dinner.

There are other advantages to having a greenhouse, as well. Greenhouses aren't just for growing fruits and vegetables, after all. Many flowers benefit from having a year-round warm climate. Rose bushes are good choices, as a few mature rose bushes can easily raise the appeal of your property. With a greenhouse, you can keep the rose bush in the warmth during cold winter months and allow it to grow. When the time is right, you can transplant the bush into the front garden. As well, a greenhouse can be a good incubator. Young plants are often started inside a greenhouse for a few months until they reach maturity, and the warmth accelerates their growth.

A greenhouse doesn't have to just be practical. Properly integrated, a greenhouse can be much like a wonderful, enclosed garden. Winding paths with beautiful flowers and other plants growing on either side, interesting statues placed nearby or fountains that have water flowing through the plumbing can add appeal to your greenhouse and make the whole area appear to be a garden in and of itself. You could also grow plants on the outside of the greenhouse, in order to make it seem like the structure rises out of the garden. A greenhouse can easily be more than just a plant incubator - it can be the whole garden itself.
