One of the most trusted pieces used in creating a unique outdoor environment is landscaping stone, which is available in many different sizes and colors and can be used for a variety of purposes. Sure, you can drive out to a small creek or a lake and wrestle the landscaping stone home in your own vehicle, but the irregular and seldom repeated sizes and styles can make them difficult to use together in a specific plan.
There are many companies that supply landscaping stone made of many materials that are cut and shaped to fit into many special designs. Using natural stone products offers a more realistic appearance, but many landscaping stone suppliers make the stones out of concrete to resemble other types of natural products. Concrete with small rough stones imbedded in the surface provide a slip resistant surface for use in area prone to being wet.
For outdoor patios, landscaping stone in round, square or rectangular shape allows the homeowner to use the stones to create a design in the patio floor. Around a pool or outdoor garden, the stones can create a walkway through the area, keeping feet from the dirt and protecting the plant life.
Landscaping Stones Help Build Raised Flower Gardens
When building a raised garden in the yard or by the driveway, landscaping stone can be used instead of wood to create the style of design unique to the local area. In some instances, one or two larger rocks can be used as the centerpiece of a flower garden, making it a focal point in the yard. Placing several landscaping stones around a water fountain or birdbath can offset the seemingly dull area, especially when intermingled with colorful flowers.
If you are using natural rocks in the yard as landscaping stone, remember that they will become slippery in wet weather. You may also have to wash them off of any moss that will begin to grow to prevent slipping and falling as you trek down the stony pathway. In most cases the stone should be at least one-foot square to enable you to place your entire foot on the landscaping stone when stepping on it to prevent sliding off the edge.
Placing stones directly on the ground is not a good idea and the area under the stone should be dug out and filled with sand and small gravel before the landscaping stone is set and leveled. This allows water to drain from under the stone, preventing it from floating up and causing a trip hazard.

Garden Design Facts & Tips
Many people don't realize that it's a good idea to plan a garden in progressive order. Your Garden of Eden should have a thought-out entrance to provide an introduction of what will be to come. There are a few ways to do this, and you should work with the idea you like best. The simplest way to introduce your garden is to have a closed door as your entrance, which adds an air of mystery. Another option is to have a long, covered walkway. You can plant ivy that will grow up and cover the walkway until only bits of sky are apparent through the leaves. Take the time to find an idea for a walkway that creates a front portal to your fairytale Garden of Eden.
