Compost Machine – The 5 Easiest Methods

A good compost machine hastens compost production. While composting is an easy and natural process, it can take a lot of time to harvest your first batch of compost. However, this need not be the case if you use a good compost machine.

1. The Compost Heap

All you will need is some open yard space somewhere near the place where you intend to use the compost. A four-foot-square is ideal. Simply mix your compost in proper amounts (three parts brown to one part green material) and wait for nature to take its course. A variation on this method would be to dig a hole around a foot deep, with a foot allowance around the edges for you to have enough space to pile up soil.

2. Concrete Blocks

If you have excess blocks from a home construction, you can use them to build your own compost machine. Otherwise a one-time purchase is needed. Begin by piling the blocks as high as you estimate your household will need. You can save on the number of blocks by opting for a three-sided concrete structure. Use iron or wooden dowels or poles to secure the unit. If you have a lot of blocks left over, you may even choose to divide the structure into 3 parts: new material, mature material, ready compost.

3. Wooden Box

If you do not have any problem handling basic carpentry, as well as spending a little more on your compost machine, this method is for you. An alternative is to recycle a wooden shipping crate. Since most of these are too big or way too small for proper composting, you will have to do some carpentry as well. The thing to remember about building in wood is that you may end up building larger than you first intended, so make allowances for that.

4. Galvanized Wire

A wire compost machine if one of the easiest to set up. The length of chicken wire you purchase will depend on the size you want; but it cannot be longer than a foot since the soft structure will collapse or fold if it is too large. Simply form the wire into a cylinder. Use iron or wood (4x4s or 2x4s) posts to anchor the wire, tying or nailing the wire to them. Cut out access on one side so you can shovel contents out.

5. Buy a commercial container.

These come in the form of fixed bins and rotating tumblers. A commercial container is typically more attractive than homemade compost machine.
