Basic Principles Of Organic Vegetable Gardening
By Gardening Editor
In this article we discuss some of the basic principles of starting your own successful organic vegetable garden ...
Organic Vegetable Gardening - It’s All About Location
Good organic vegetable gardening starts with a good location that provides lots of sun with no trees to shade the garden or tree roots to rob your plants of nutrients. Your garden will also need a spot that is well drained and doesn't sit in water after a hard rain. Once you have chosen the location for your garden the next step is to make sure you have good soil. This means adding lots of composed material.
You can easily make your own compost from organic kitchen waste and lawn clippings. One of the best additions to ant garden is well composted animal manure and if you know a farmer or a horse rancher, it’s very likely that they will give you all you need to build a nutrient rich organic vegetable garden.
Organic Vegetable Gardening - Squash Those Pests
Pest control can be one of the most challenging aspects of organic vegetable gardening but you want to use practices that are safe for the plants, as well as humans and animals. Healthy plants are less likely to develop insect infestations so always plant disease and insect resistant varieties. Mulch plants to help keep the garden free of weeds that might harbor insects and use marigolds as companion plants as they repel insects. If you should find an occasional insect, it is best to simply pick it off and dispose of it.
Vegetable gardens require a lot of water to produce fruit. Water early in the day so plants are not wet at night. This can cause mold and fungus. Conserve water by watering where it is needed, at the base of the plants and stay out of the garden when plants are wet to help prevent spreading disease.
Not only is organic vegetable gardening the best way to ensure chemical free vegetables for your family but it is an enjoyable and inexpensive pastime as well and what better pastime than to help improve the heath of the planet we live on.

Gardening Facts & Tips
Using the water culture method provides the perfect amount of nutrients, water, and oxygen to your hydroponics grow system. This popular raised gardening method uses plants floating on top of a sheet of Styrofoam while a pump adds oxygen and nutrient filled water to the root systems of the plants. Lettuce and other water-based plants are ideal for this hydroponics grow system and other plants should be grown using other methods that are more suitable for them. Teachers also use the water culture method in their classroom as a teaching tool for their students.
