When spring is approaching, is your garden bed ready and waiting? Sometimes it’s hard to imagine those lush green crops when the weather is still chilly and there is yet a covering of snow on the ground. But early spring is the perfect time to begin dreaming of spring gardening and vegetables grown in your own backyard. And the first key to a successful crop of spring gardening vegetables is to plan how those beds are going to be cultivated. Isn’t it wonderful that we can ponder all things green and leafy even when the snow is flying outside?

It’s All In The Crop Rotation

Crop rotation is a valuable asset to spring gardening vegetables for two reasons. First, it aids in getting the proper nutrients to plants, since different crops have different nutritional needs. Second, it aids in pest control, since different types of pests like different kinds of plants. Crop rotation in its simplest form means rotating the planting location of each of your vegetables from year to year. For example, if you plant a crop that requires a high amount of nutrients one year, like squash, you may want to use that space for a lower need plant the next year, like a root vegetable. This way, nutrients will not be completely depleted from the soil from year to year.

It also means that if you had problems with pests on your tomatoes last year, by planting a different crop in that space this year, you may be able to get rid of that pest for good. An insect that likes to feed on tomato roots may not be so happy with cabbage or another crop in its place. This is an effective method of pest control that is completely organic. Also, if crop rotation leads to healthier plants, your spring gardening vegetables will be less vulnerable to pests right from the beginning.

Get Your Timing Down

The next factor in successful spring vegetable gardening is the timing of your plantings. Some of your cool weather crops will need to be put into the ground much earlier than those that require warmer temperatures to thrive. To get a complete listing of which vegetables should be planted when in your specific region, you can contact your local extension office for information. Most gardeners know that the majority of crops will not go into the ground until the danger of the last frost is past. This date will vary greatly depending on which area of the country you live in. Again, your best source for frost dates will be your extension office. Once you have this date, you will want to begin planting your spring gardening vegetables as soon as possible once that danger is over.

Spring vegetable gardening is a wonderful way to benefit from fresh, homegrown produce throughout the summer and fall months. Enjoy your garden!
