Using Herbs For Cooking
Herbs have long been used for cooking. There is no recorded history of when people started using herbs for cooking but it is assumed that it is as old as cooking itself. Herbs and spices add flavor and aroma to the cooked meals and this is why many chefs and cooks around the world utilize these for more flavorful and aromatic dishes.
Not only are herbs for cooking but they are also used for medicinal purposes and other healing remedies. Many cultures and subcultures around the world have many uses for herbs for cooking and as remedies for healing. Before modern medicine was developed, many healers and shamans used herbs.
Kinds Of Herbs For Cooking
There are so many herbs for cooking that are essential to making a meal unforgettable. The most used herbs are garlic, basil, anise, coriander, celery, rosemary, sage and many more.
Garlic is the most commonly used of all the herbs for cooking. Garlic has a great taste that can change a meal from dull to delicious. Many cooks use it to add zest to a meal. Some people use garlic as a topping for breads and pasta. Some fry it until a light golden brown and use these as toppings. Make sure not to overdo the frying because it will taste bitter if overdone. Garlic is also used in some cultures as an antiseptic for wounds and insect bites.
Basil is used for its spicy scent and flavor. Many Asian countries use this herb for cooking and medicinal remedies. Anise is also use for its unique and strong flavor for cooking mostly exotic foods. Coriander is also called cilantro. It is the leaves and dried seeds of the plant that are usually used for cooking. The leaves and seeds of the coriander plant have different tastes. Leaves are usually used fresh and seeds are dried.
Celery is used primarily as herbs for cooking. It is the stalks that are usually used for cooking although the seeds and leaves can also be utilized. Rosemary is an herb that has an astringent, bitter taste. Its smell is similar to that of mustard when cooked. Sage is often used as a condiment for fish and meat meals.
These herbs for cooking are just a few of the many available for food. Herbs for cooking add to the flavor and aroma of all the foods they are used in. Many people appreciate a meal more due to the aroma that these herbs emit.
