So, you’ve decided you want to grow your own vegetables at home. Good for you! Gardening can be a rewarding hobby, and homegrown veggies nearly always taste fresher and sweeter than the store bought varieties. However, there is some basic information that you will need to get under your belt before you begin throwing seeds in the ground, hoping for the best. With a little bit of knowledge about vegetable gardening for beginners and a lot of preparation, you will be on the road to a bountiful harvest in no time at all.

Vegetable Gardening - Location

The first thing that vegetable gardening for beginners needs to teach you is where to place that garden bed. Why? Because most crops will thrive in sunny conditions, so you want to make sure that you plant in a bright spot in your yard that does not receive too much shade. If you aren’t sure of the sun exposure, take a week or two to observe the site that you are considering, so that you know how many hours of sunlight the area will receive. It is also a good idea to note when the sun hits, since direct sun in the afternoon can be too harsh and hot for some of your more delicate crops.

Vegetable Gardening - Soil

Dirt is another important factor in vegetable gardening for beginners. Chances are, the soil that is in your yard right now will not be conducive to vegetable growth without a lot of help. This means tilling the soil to loosen it, and mixing it with matter and nutrients that will help your plants to thrive. If you want to get really technical about your soil preparation, you can have it tested at your local nursery or purchase a soil test kit to do yourself at home. This way you can ensure that your dirt receives all of the substances that it is currently lacking with the matter that you add to it.

Vegetable Gardening - Plants and Times

This aspect of vegetable gardening for beginners can best be helped through your neighborhood nursery or your local extension office. This is because the types of plants that you choose and when you choose to plant them will greatly depend upon your region, climate and conditions. These factors can vary greatly from region to region, even within your own state or county. In fact, conditions can even change within your own backyard, which might explain why some plants will thrive in a particular corner of your space and not in another. Talk to someone local about how to choose your first crops, and then it will be up to you to learn from the trial and error of your own experiences.

Vegetable gardening for beginners can seem like an overwhelming challenge, but by breaking the process down into simple steps, you can go far in ensuring your success.
